London is one of the most popular travel destinations of all – and rightly so. England’s capital is multicultural, hip, a Mecca for sports and culture enthusiasts and worth a visit at any time of year.
I’ll be honest: I love London. The short flight time, the super underground network, the many sights and of course the countless pubs – what’s not to like? OK, the weather is not always perfect and the typical British food is not for real gourmets, but Salzburg is also known for its lace-up rain and in terms of culinary delights there are plenty of alternatives to burgers, fish & chips and pies in London.
Everything on foot
One of the big advantages of London is that visitors can explore a lot of sightseeings on foot in one single day. Thus, my tip is: in any case, take some comfortable shoes for walking. Tower Bridge, Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, St. Pauls Cathedral and the London Eye are more or less located right at the Thames. Moreover, the Buckingham Palace and the Hyde Park are also not far away. Thus, it is possible to visit all these sightseeings in one day – without any stress and with enough time for one or two stops in the pub. For those who are not so good on foot, the city is littered with subway stations. It usually takes less than two minutes before a train enters the station. Just notice the colour of the line you want to take and in which direction you want to go – a piece of cake and practical on top of that. For those who want to travel a lot by public transport, an “Oyster Card” is worthwhile. With this pre-paid card, you can travel throughout London at special rates.
Attack on the credit card
During a visit to the capital of England, an extensive shopping day should not be missing. On Oxford Street, shopping victims will find almost all the stores and boutiques – and much more. Carnaby Street is also a must: the street in the north of the Soho district is a pedestrian zone and has been famous since the 1960s. The world famous Harrods department store is the third most visited sight in London. Specially the food department located at the ground floor with all its food halls is a highlight. Covent Garden also belongs to a popular destination in order to get some souvenirs for the loved ones. Thus, the choice of shopping possibilities is almost unlimited.
Trips in London
A visit to Camden Market is also worthwhile. Everything from candles, vinyl records and alternative jewellery to antiques and old books is sold here. Don’t forget to visit the Cyberdog shop and be amazed. The two floors of the shop offer the most futuristic clothing and accessories in town – with the right light and sound effects. I also want to recommend Regent’s Park and of course Notting Hill. While Regent’s Park is a place to stroll, in Notting Hill you can browse the market, look for the blue door from the movie of the same name or sit in a cozy café and enjoy the time.
